Cervical Screening

Cervical Screening

Cervical cancer has been the 8th commonest cancer among females in Hong Kong and it is the 9th leading cause of female cancer deaths in Hong Kong. Cervical cancer is often asymptomatic at early stage. Early detection by cervical screening and treatment can prevent 80 to 90% of cervical cancer cases. It is recommended that any woman who has ever had sex between the age of 25 and 64 needs to undergo regular screening.

To have the test done is quick and simple and only takes a few minutes. You will lie on your back and the doctor will use a special instrument called a speculum to gently open the vagina so that the cervix can be seen. A special device will be used to brush cells from the neck of the womb. You will not feel pain, only minor discomfort.

Cervical screenings should start at the age of 25 or earlier if there is sexual exposure.  If the first test result is normal, a second test should be carried out 12 months later. If the second test is also normal then the test should be repeated at least every 3 years.
