Early Pregnancy Assessment
Being pregnant, particularly in the early stages, can be an anxious time. Some women experience some bleeding or abdominal pain during their early pregnancies. Therefore early pregnancy assessment is crucial to ensure baby is well and exclude other conditions such as ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage.
A detailed history and physical examination will be performed. A pelvic ultrasound scan will be done. This is to look for the number of heart beat of the baby, and exclude other conditions like ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage.
Sometimes a blood test for pregnancy hormone (bhCG) would be done if the pregnancy is too early and ectopic pregnancy cannot be totally excluded. Ultrasound scan may need to be repeated 1-2 weeks later if the pregnancy is too early.
Your doctor will explain to you about the findings and the subsequent management. Please feel free to discuss with your doctor.
